Common Dental Emergencies and How to Handle Them

While dental emergencies are rare, they can occur at any time. Knowing how to respond in the moment can make all the difference. Below are some of the most common dental emergencies and the steps you should take if they happen to you or a loved one.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

For a broken or cracked tooth, gently rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to reduce swelling and pain. If possible, save any pieces of the tooth and bring them with you to your appointment. Contact our office immediately so we can assess the damage and determine the best course of treatment, such as a crown or filling.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth constitutes a critical dental emergency. If this happens, find the tooth and rinse it gently with water—avoid using soap and do not scrub the tooth. Hold the tooth by the crown (the part you usually see above the gum line) and place it in a clean container with milk or a saline solution. Time is critical in these cases, so call our office right away or head to the nearest hospital. If addressed quickly, we may be able to reimplant the tooth.

Severe Toothache

Tooth pain can be a sign of a serious underlying issue, such as an infection or cavity. If you are experiencing a severe or persistent toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and inspect the area for any trapped food or debris. A cold compress can help alleviate the pain, but avoid applying heat as this can cause irritation. Oral pain relievers can be taken to manage discomfort until you can see a dentist. Schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible, so we can diagnose and treat the cause of your toothache.

Object Caught Between Teeth

If something is lodged between your teeth, try gently removing it with dental floss. Never use sharp objects like pins or knives, as this can damage your gums and teeth. If you are unable to remove the object with floss, contact our office for assistance.

Broken Jaw

A broken jaw is a serious injury that requires immediate attention. If you suspect your jaw is broken, apply a cold compress to control swelling and stabilize the injury. Call our emergency number or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. Jaw injuries often occur with head trauma, so it’s important to be evaluated by a medical professional promptly.

We are here to help you. When your dental health is at risk, we will do everything we can to make sure that you’re treated as soon as possible.
